Transparent “Ghost Car” Sold at Auction

Some car enthusiasts prefer black, some red. But a buyer at a Michigan auction got a truly one-of-a-kind color – transparent. One of the strangest cars in a long time, a see-through Pontiac Deluxe Six created for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, sold at auction over the weekend for $308,000.
That’s right in the middle of the range that RM Auctions thought it would go for: $275,000 to $475,000.
The so-called “ghost car” actually reminds us more of those traveling exhibit lately of preserved bodies showing the muscle and skeleton. The see-through Pontiac is encased in well-preserved Plexiglas that has somehow held up through the years with only a few cracks and chips. The car still works and has 86 miles on the odometer, RM Auctions says.
After the big fair, the car was displayed at the Smithsonian and later in a succession of Pontiac dealers. No word on who bought it or where it will turn up next.
The Ghost Car was first displayed at the 1939/1940 New York World’s Fair, Squindo said. It toured a number of dealerships, and then was at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. for a number of years. It has been owned by the same family since the 1980s. “They were rather sad to see their beloved car go,” Squindo said. He could not disclose the name of the buyer.(Reuters)
